Absolutely fascinating real-time drama in a Metafilter thread where a member asked for help convincing a Russian friend not to take a “job” in a likely front for prostitution in NY. Read through and I guarantee you will be tearing up at the conclusion.
I don’t have time to read the whole thing, but I picked up the highlights. Wow. Just wow.
Absolutely amazing.
It’s a super long thread and a little heart-wrenching to read, but the gist of it: someone suspected that Russian immigrant friends were being exploited and headed for a bad situation. MeFi posters stepped it up and helped - literally, physically - stop the friend from meeting up with a shady character and got all the proper authorities (many of whom are MeFi’ers themselves) in line, so that this potential human trafficking ring will be shut down.
